A religious court official in Indonesia has blamed social networking site Facebook for a rise in teenage pregnancies and under-age marriages, a report said Thursday. Siti Haryanti, a secretary at the religious court in MountKidul, a town in CentralJava, said young couples were having sex after meeting online and she had seen the number of under-age marriages increase in the past year. “Many couples admitted they got to know each other through the site and continued their relationship until they got pregnant outside wedlock,” Haryanti was quoted as saying by Antara state newsagency. “The site is easy to access even to the remote villages so intensive relationships caused many teenagers to get pregnant outside marriage,” she said. Haryanti said 130 under-age couples have sought marriage licences at the religious court this year compared to 120 couples in 2010. Two ladies suspected to be students of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State were allegedly raped by some members of a secret cult and their nude pictures posted on the social-network site, Facebook. The development led to a violent attack among warring cult groups in the town leaving at least two students of the university dead, and paralyzing commercial activities in Ijebu-Ode and its environs. The female students, who were alleged to be members of the cult group, Red Rose, were said to have been abducted and taken into a nearby bush where they were raped. A 51-year-old woman turned over at least $15,000 to a man she considered her boyfriend, though they had only spoken via Facebook and phone. The woman's sister found out about the transactions and contacted the Marion County Sheriff's Office. Someone using the name “Martin Kahl” met the woman via the social networking site in June. He told the woman he was going to Nigeria to work on a construction project. A few weeks later, he told the woman that the project had fallen through and he began to ask her to send him money, which she did. The biggest single transaction was for $4,000, which the man said was to free him after he was detained by local police, according to reports. A check of phone numbers used by theman were traced to overseas numbers and the name “Martin Kahl” was tied to similar scams.
