OAU Pulls Out Of ASUU, Forms New Union

Image
A major crack has appeared in the ranks of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife branch, at the weekend, decided to pull out of the national body to form a new union. The decision to pull out of ASUU national by OAU branch was taken at a congress held on February 12, when it rejected the resolutions of ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on the face-off between it and the parent body over an internal crisis. Other reasons given by OAU branch to form a new union are the unilateral removal of the elected treasurer by ASUU national president and the alleged transfer of N11 million from OAU branch account to ASUU national account. The congress noted that the removal of the duly elected treasurer and transfer of N11 million prompted majority of members to request that their check off dues usually remitted to ASUU national be stopped. The OAU branch also cited the decision of ASUU NEC to accept the suspended result of the...

Bishop David Eniola Oyedepo is a man who many see as an embodiment of tolerance as his teachings prove so. Apart from his normal teaching which is based on Faith, he had at different occasions talked extensively on tolerance. It is therefore appalling that a gross act of intolerance will happen in a place

800,000 Nigerian Students to gain University Admission by 2016

Over one million candidates scored 180 and above in the last Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and are qualified to gain admission, but Julius Okojie, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), said only about 400,000 candidates will be admitted into the university system. He said the facilities on ground cannot accommodate all. He said his new administration will focus on improving access to education and is aiming at increasing the number of students that will be admitted into universities to 800,000 within the next five years.

Many candidates will miss 2011 University Admissions - JAMB

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that many ofthe candidates seeking admission to universities this year would not be admitted. A release made available to the Nigerian Tribune and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Mr Timothy Oyedeji, said because of the carrying capacity of universities, coupled with the rush for university education by candidates, who mostly did not like to have higher education in other institutions like polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education, “vast majority of candidates who applied to be admitted to universities will not be admitted.” The release further said the reason for this low admission rate would “not be because they have not scored high grades, nor for their failure in the post-United Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME), but wholly because of quota constraints.” It said out of the 368 tertiary institutions in Nigeria, five, with the University of Lagos in the lead, were chosen by 406,389 candidat...
